How much should a small business website cost in South Africa?

A straight answer on website pricing in South Africa — the real ranges, what drives the cost, and how to tell value from just cheap.

If you've asked three people what a website costs, you've probably had three wildly different answers — from "my nephew will do it for R500" to "the agency quoted R80,000." Both can be true. Here's how to make sense of it as a small business owner in South Africa.

The honest ranges

For most small businesses, a website falls into one of three bands:

  • A refresh of an existing site: from around R5,000. A modern update on what you already have — new look, better structure, faster.
  • A custom build from scratch: from around R10,000. Structure, copy and design shaped around how your business actually works.
  • Large, advanced or automated builds: R60,000 and up. 3D, complex integrations, custom functionality — scoped and quoted individually.

These are once-off costs. Hosting and any ongoing care are usually separate and much smaller.

What actually drives the price

Two sites can both be "five pages" and cost very differently. The real drivers are:

  • Custom design versus a template. Something built around your brand takes more work than dropping your logo into a theme.
  • Functionality. A brochure site is cheaper than one that takes bookings, payments or online orders.
  • Content. If you have your copy and photos ready, it moves faster. If the designer has to create it, that's more time.
  • Integrations. Connecting to email tools, payment gateways or a booking system adds scope.

Cheap is not the same as good value

The cheapest quote is tempting, but a website is a business tool, not a receipt. A R500 site that's slow, doesn't show up on Google and never brings you an enquiry cost you far more than it saved. The right question isn't "what's the cheapest?" — it's "what will actually get me found and get me work, at a fair price?"

Equally, you don't need to overpay. A lean, modern studio using good tooling can deliver senior-quality work at a fraction of agency rates, without the agency overhead.

What to ask before you pay

  • Is the price once-off, and what's included?
  • Will it be fast and work properly on a phone? (Most of your visitors are on mobile.)
  • Is it built to be found on Google — proper titles, descriptions and structure?
  • Who owns it, and can it grow later if my business does?

The bottom line

Budget from R5,000 for a refresh, around R10,000 for a proper custom build, and more for advanced work. Pay for value, not for the lowest number — and always get a clear, itemised quote before anything starts.
